What is False Teaching?

False teaching is not a modern issue—it has existed since the beginning, even in the Garden of Eden. It refers to teachings that are either deliberately deceptive or mistakenly contrary to the truth of God’s Word. The Bible consistently warns us about the dangers of false teachers and their misleading doctrines, from Genesis to Revelation. These warnings include:

  1. Beware of their lies – False teachers often distort the truth, leading people away from the Gospel.
  2. Avoid the allure of empty promises. False teachers may promise prosperity, success, or spiritual enlightenment, but these promises are ultimately empty and deceitful.
  3. Be vigilant and protect one another. We are called to guard against false teaching, hold each other accountable, and protect the faith.
  4. Expect false teachers – The Bible clarifies that false teachers will arise, and we must be prepared to recognize and reject their errors.
  5. False teachers lead people astray – Their teachings often divert believers from the true faith, causing spiritual harm and division.
  6. Teachers should approach their role with caution – Given the weight of responsibility in teaching others, those who desire to teach must be careful and well-grounded in the truth.
