Examine
Jesus said in Matthew 15:17-20 that a man is defiled not by what is going into him but by what comes out of his heart. The heart is where our thoughts, behaviors, and emotions begin. The first step of Bible Study is understanding our hearts’ condition, affections, and motivations.
Foundation
The second step is to build a foundation. The Bible is God’s revelation of who He is and what He has done. Through studying Biblical Theology, and Systematic Theology and learning how to study the Bible, we are informed by God’s revelation, which offers us the foundation for applying scripture.
Application
Once we understand what the Bible teaches, we can apply what we have learned. Romans 12:2 tells us that we are not to be informed by the world, but we are to be transformed by renewing our minds. In order for our hearts to rest in the grace of Christ, we must first renew what we believe.
Apologetics
In Matthew 28:19&20 Jesus’ final words were to go and make disciples. As we learn to walk in the grace of Christ, we are to do apologetics. In 1 Peter 3:15, we are told that we are to be ready to give an answer for the hope that is within us. It is through this hope of Christ that we are equipped to do apologetics.
